Exploring Cultural Identity Through Food Lesson Plan

Through this lesson, students will understand what role food plays in culture and how it shapes cultural identity. Through watching and learning about different national dishes around the world, discussion, and creating an ode to their favorite food I hope to demonstrate better understanding of multiculturalism. I also aim for students to recognize how they can relate to Amy Tan, even if they are American or do not have a largely foreign family.

In this lesson students will learn about author Amy Tan. Students will read a biography of her life and a list of her works, before analyzing one of her works. Through this lesson, I hope to demonstrate the struggles of leading a multicultural life. I also aim for students to recognize how they can relate to Amy Tan, even if they are American or do not have a largely foreign family.

These lesson plans will challenge participants to reflect on their own cultural heritage and connect with each other. They will write short poems where each line begins with “I am from,” which will allow them to describe their heritage using the details and memories most important to them.

In this lesson students will learn about a poet and author Maya Angelou. Students will read a biography of her life and a list of her works, before analyzing one of her poems. Students will learn how Maya Angelou overcame hardship and discrimination to find her own voice and to influence others to believe in themselves and use their voices for positive change.
